IYANA PAUL SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN REGIONAL ITF/COTECC TRAINING CAMP
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is committed to assisting the most talented junior players in the region. The invited players are selected based on their performance in the last 12 months; during the ITF and COTECC organized events; during the U12 invitational tournaments of SR4 and by observation of the ITF Development Officer during tournaments and the visits of the nations. Based on the above criterion Iyana Paul was selected to participate in the Annual U12 Training Camp in Trinidad & Tobago.
Iyana Paul has had a very good run this year participating in most of the COTECC and U12 Team Championships. Paul has represented St. Lucia for the past three years on the National U12 Team playing at racquet one and two. This year she was the racquet one on the U12 team as she is ranked #1 locally. The team participated in the Championship in Trinidad placing 5th overall. Although the team placed 5th Paul won all her singles matches played. Paul is Coached by Coach Vernon Lewis former Davis Cup player for St. Lucia and recipient for the Hall of Fame Davis Cup Award.
Later on this year she went on to be the finalist (2nd) in the U14 Wadadli Bowl COTECC Tournament in Antigua. The last St. Lucian female tennis player to make it to a final in a COTECC Regional Tournament was Meggan William three years ago. Paul is a form one student of the Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School. She will also be competing soon in the National Schools Tennis Tournament representing her school.
The camp will be spearheaded by ITF Expert Coach Gustavo Granitto from Argentina. Coach Granitto has worked for the ITF for many years and also works with professional players at his academy in Florida. Assisting him is Coach Calista Mohammed from Trinidad & Tobago and other level one coaches from the region, the Coach representing St. Lucia is Coach Scyla Murray. The team will be working with the players for one week from the October 31st to the 4th of November, 2019. Paul is really excited to be a part of this training camp as the best players in the region will be there training and competing. The objective of this camp is to providing a variety of technical work, drills, games, team competition, all in a fun and competitive environment. This exposure and variety of tennis, often ignites the passion and gets players really focused on learning and improving their skills.
